The Wachowskis built a blockbuster that actually has something on its mind. The philosophical stuff (free will, the nature of reality, what it means to "wake up") is smoothly integrated throughout the film, and the action scenes and ultra-cool style still hold up incredibly well today. The central question about whether we'd choose comfortable illusion over harsh truth hasn't gotten any less uncomfortable since 1999.
Grade: A+
